Get to Know the Issue 33 Staff: Erin Hoffman

Today we’re getting to know Erin Hoffman, who is a Brico-celebrity for her fantastic stories about working life and the perils of basing your knowledge of love off of Harry Potter fanfiction.

  • Community Involvement Officer
  1. You’re on the Ave and suddenly become ravenously hungry. Where do you go to eat?
  • The nearest place that serves onion rings.
  1. What are you currently binge-watching?
  • Cali Kopzcick’s Facebook profile.
  1. What’s one of your favorite pieces of prose?
  • I just read Sharp Objects, and now I’m equally in love with and terrified of Gillian Flynn.
  1. What’s one of your favorite pieces of poetry?
  • “At Last” by Erin Belieu
  1. What’s one of your favorite pieces of art?
  • I’m not very artsy, unfortunately, but I saw Ann Hamilton’s “Common SENSE” exhibit at The Henry last month and I thought it had a lot of interesting things to say about inspiration and creativity.
  1. Batman or Superman?
  • Cali Kopzcick.
  1. You have to model your house after a building on the UW campus. Which one would you pick?
  • Padelford: It’s impossible to navigate and might be asbestos-ridden.
  1. What’s the best musical act you’ve seen live?
  • One Direction. I made eye contact with Zayn. We had a moment.
  1. Why did you decide come to the UW?
  • It was the most practical, inexpensive option, and luckily I fell in love with the English department, which had lots of opportunities to get involved.
  1. Would you rather skydive or bungee-jump?
  • Skydiveeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
  1. What’s been your favorite experience with Bricolage?
  • The Issue 32 release party was loads of fun! It was so great to meet all our amazing contributors and hear them perform and present the pieces that made up the journal. Also, there was cake.
  1. What was the last movie you saw in theaters?
  • “Furious 7,” or as I like to call it, “Homoeroticism and Explosions 7.”
  1. Are you a sports fan and do you follow any teams?
  1. Where’s your favorite place to study?
  • Odegaard. The color orange inspires me.
  1. Besides Bricolage, what else are you involved in?
  • Outside of Bricolage, I’m the co-copy chief of The Daily and an unpaid intern at a foreign rights literary agency.
  1. Pick five songs that would be included on the soundtrack of your life.
  • “The Only Exception” by Paramore, five times.
  1. Cake, cookies, or brownies?
  • All of them, all at once.
  1. Do you like scary movies?
  • NO.
  1. Have you ever broken a bone? How did it happen?
  • I recently broke my foot by tripping on a curb. It was all very exciting.
  1. What are you majoring in?
  • Double majoring in creative writing and stress eating.
  1. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
  • Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.
  1. Coffee or tea?
  • Coffee!
  1. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
  • I don’t sleep. I wait.
  1. What have you learned from being a Bricolage staff member?
  • I’ve learned a lot about the importance of creating a community around the things you love. Throughout the past two years, I’ve realized the importance of reaching out to people and getting them involved, and I’ve expanded my own definitions of what good writing and good art are.
  1. What’s the first thing you check when you go online?
  • My email.
  1. You can travel anywhere for a year without having to worry about money. Where would you go?
  • I’d go to Greece, where my family is from, and spend a year there.
  1. Are you afraid of clowns?
  • Nawwww
  1. What’s your go-to snack food?
  • The flesh of people who don’t return my emails in a timely manner.
  1. Favorite class you’ve ever taken at UW?
  • Creative writing workshops!
  1. Who always makes you laugh?
  • A certain Poetry Editor with an affinity for sweets and Talking Heads.
  1. Advice you wish you had received as a freshman?
  • Stop trying to be pre-med. Seriously, just stop.
