Get to Know the Issue 33 Staff: Stephanie King

Our last staff member to participate in this riveting series is Stephanie King, who feels awkward writing this about herself so she’s just going to stop now:

  1. What’s your role in Bricolage?
    • Managing Editor
  2. You’re on the Ave and suddenly become ravenously hungry. Where do you go to eat?
    • EJ Burger, Chipotle, Aladdin’s (on 42nd, the other one is inferior), or Earl’s. Off-Ave mentions go to Full Tilt and Amazing Thai Cuisine.
  3. What are you currently binge-watching?
    • This strange combination of “The West Wing,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Game of Thrones.” My life is a little chaotic right now.
  4. What’s one of your favorite pieces of prose?
    • “A Temporary Matter” by Jhump Lahiri
  5. What’s one of your favorite pieces of poetry?
    • Catullus 101
  6. What’s one of your favorite pieces of art?
    • “The Rape of the Sabine Women” is a sculpture by Giambologna and it is incredible, you see something different at every angle.
  7. Batman or Superman?
    • False, Aquaman.
  8. You have to model your house after a building on the UW campus. Which one would you pick?
    • Denny! It’s just so stately when you walk up to it from the quad.
  9. What’s the best musical act you’ve seen live?
    • Arturo Sandoval at Jazz Alley, or Muse, who I’ve seen live three times and have been incredible each time.
  10. Why did you decide come to the UW?
    • I liked the idea of going to a big school with big resources but with a lot of ways to find niche areas to get involved with.
  11. Would you rather skydive or bungee-jump?
    • I’ve already skydived (skydove?), so I guess the bungee is next!
  12. What’s been your favorite experience with Bricolage?
    • Every time we get the year’s journal is a pretty exhilarating feeling. Shameless plug, come to our Issue 33 Release Party on May 27th to share that feeling with us!
  13. What was the last movie you saw in theaters?
    • Avengers: Age of Flannel
  14. Are you a sports fan and do you follow any teams?
    • Being in marching band has forced me to understand sports, so now I’ll support any UW team because I’ve seen firsthand how hard they work while being full-time students.
  15. Where’s your favorite place to study?
    • First floor of Allen, all the way in the back by the books on fish diseases.
  16. Besides Bricolage, what else are you involved in?
    • I play trumpet in the Husky Marching Band and copy edit at The Daily.
  17. Pick five songs that would be included on the soundtrack of your life.
    • Ughhhh I wrote this question and am now totally regretting it. Okay.
      • Unsquare Dance by Dave Brubeck
      • String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10, Andantino by Claude Debussy
      • Bedroom Hymns by Florence + The Machine
      • Cool by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim (from West Side Story)
      • Panic Station by Muse
  18. Cake, cookies, or brownies?
    • Wait, why haven’t we combined all three yet?!
  19. Do you like scary movies?
  20. Have you ever broken a bone? How did it happen?
    • No but I’m just waiting…
  21. What are you majoring in?
    • English and Classical Studies.
  22. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
    • A direwolf, a perma-tiger cub, a hawk, and a narwhal.
  23. Coffee or tea?
    • Tea forever.
  24. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
    • Night for sure. I only see the sunrise when I haven’t gone to bed the night before.
  25. What have you learned from being a Bricolage staff member?
    • Learn to value and work with the people who think differently than you. Only commit to something if you can actually do it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and always offer help when you can. People will come if there is food.
  26. What’s the first thing you check when you go online?
    • Email, and then second email.
  27. You can travel anywhere for a year without having to worry about money. Where would you go?
    • I would travel to wherever they have perfected cryogenic freezing, freeze myself with specific instruction to only unfreeze myself when time travel has been invented, then spend my remaining money to time travel back to Rome circa 80 CE to be present for the opening of the Flavian Amphitheater (better known as the Colosseum) because then I can finally die happy and fulfilled.
  28. Are you afraid of clowns?
    • If they don’t bother me, I won’t bother them.
  29. What’s your go-to snack food?
    • Anything can be a snack if you just eat more food for your meal.
  30. Favorite class you’ve ever taken at UW?
    • Professor Stroups’ “War Games” class! It’s where I discovered my obsession with gladiators.
  31. Who always makes you laugh?
    • My housemates. I live with seven other trumpet players and they are the weirdest bunch of people but they never fail to make me laugh ❤
  32. Advice you wish you had received as a freshman?
    • Take some time to get acquainted with culture that wasn’t produced by white men. Also, if you actually want to be good at something (like trumpet or Latin), you’re going to have to practice. Finally, just take a deep breath. It will be okay.
  33. Plans for after you graduate?
    • I’m going to graduate school at the University College London to get a Master’s in Publishing. Both of those things sound fake, but I’m pretty sure they’re real.
